Quality improvement for self-confidence, critical-thinking, and psychomotor skills in basic life support of nursing health professionals through case-scenario simulation training

Background: Recognition and timely management of medical emergencies in non-critical care units are essential initiating delivering high quality care. Simulation training is a constructive tool that can be utilized to refresh maintain knowledge skills for staff may not encounter frequently. This study examined work at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center Community Living (CLC), subacute inpatient rehabilitation unit, on their critical thinking skills, knowledge, role responsibilities confidence levels prior after implementation mixed intervention one-hour webinar didactic case-based simulation with debriefing. The purpose was improve thinking, when working deteriorating patient.Methods: A pretest-posttest design used conduct study. Pre post surveys were given 42 health professionals which included registered nurses (RN), licensed practical (LPN) nursing aides participating case scenario using high-fidelity mannequin simulate emergency. Analyses performed two-tailed t-test p-value significance less than .05 Excel JMP by SAS.Results: Among participants, there significant improvement recognizing signs patient deterioration activation code team (p < .001). Critical appropriate type response based patients’ speed also improved Overall, felt more comfortable, confident knowledgeable concerning roles local policy emergent situations.Conclusions: team-based course confidence, as it pertains teams willingness actively participate emergencies.
